YA Indie Carnival ~ Max and Nadia ~ Becoming Cursed

Friday, March 30, 2012

Our theme this week is Spring Break, but instead of giving you an excerpt about Spring Break, I'm going to suggest some good reading for the time off! And give you an excerpt on my work in progress...

Here are some books I've read, and my teens have read, recently and quite enjoyed...

ReVamped by Ada Adams
If you're looking for something with a new take on vampires, then I think you'll like this one. In terms of the myth, her vampires are fairly classic with born and made vampires, but she covers a new angle I like... Imagine what the reaction would be if people knew vampires existed. Would they be scared? Or, after all the hype as of late, would they more likely be celebrities? That's the angle Ada uses, and I like how unique it is. It's a nice blend of action and humor, with a sweet dash of romance. It held my attention, and I had to finish it before I could finish the other two books in my currently-reading pile. (The Hunger Games and Entwined.) Only 2.99 for the Kindle version from Amazon.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
I just barely finished this. Just in time to watch the movie with my girlfriends. I really liked it and think it was very well done, even though the whole concept of the story is rather distressing. If you haven't read this yet, I recommend you snatch up the Kindle version while it's on sale for 5 bucks from Amazon!

The Secret circle by L. J. Smith
My 18 year old has reading through these very fast. Mrs Smith is one of her favorite authors, and this series is really awesome. Don't think it's anything like the show, because it's not. Sadly they don't let this author have any control over the shows based on her books. :(

A World Without Heroes (Beyonders) by Brandon Mull
My 14 year old has been devouring these as fast as they've come out, and she LOVES them. Also by Brandon is the amazing Fablehaven Series. Great Spring Break reading to keep the kids entertained while they're home from school.

I wish I had new stuff ready for a Spring Break release. But, alas, I'm not quite done yet. Sophia's Cookbook For Mortals is next and I'm doing the finishing touches now. I'm also working very hard on Max and Nadia's story. Here are the first 1000 words of their story. ENJOY!!!

Chapter One
Becoming Cursed

“Why can’t you just let me die in peace?” rasped Max using up a large measure of his waning strength, resenting the men standing beside his bed for making him force out the words at all. Drawing a breath that wheezed into his failing lungs, and rattled on its way back out, Max closed his eyes again.

The rancid flesh around his wound had stopped throbbing at least, and was now a dull tingle. But the poison had leeched into his bloodstream. He could feel the toxic infection work its way to his heart, slowing it. From the inside out it sapped the life from his body.

Max was more than ready and more than willing to die from such a battle wound. He just wished his death had been instant instead of drawn own like this. A wave of new pain lanced through his insides and the surge caused him to cough violently. The contraction of his abdomen forced his head up and away from his pillow. Cool air swept across his sweaty hair and scalp. A hand caught his head, cradling it. Max resented that too. He didn’t want to be bothered even with kindness right now.

“Sir Maximilion, will you please join our order of knights?” The strongly spoken query drew his attention from his pain-filled jumble of barely coherent thought.

Max forced open his eyes and aimed a scowl at the man intruding on his efforts to welcome death so he could finally be released from this torture. The action took a lot more energy than he’d anticipated. His vision blurred instead of focused on the man who’d said his name was Beon. Another called Seth stood by his side. They looked like a pair of wavering blobs, one dressed in green, the other in blue. Max had met them, but only briefly a while back on his most recent visit to London. “Leave me be,” he managed in a raspy voice.
Fingers grasped the sleeves of his sweat-soaked shirt and gave him a shake. The laces at his neck loosened and cool air snapped at his feverish skin. “Listen to me, Max. You don’t have to die!”

Max wanted to growl, “Have you lost your bloody mind?” And emphasize his frustration with a creative string of vile curses. Instead he wrinkled his brow in anger again because that’s all he had the strength for. How could the fool possibly say he didn’t have to die? The idea was pure lunacy; he knew how he was feeling. He was dying, and there was no doubt about it, no escaping it, and no cure for the poison pumping through him.

“Hmm... Is he scowling at us?”

Seth nodded. “Indeed, I believe he is.”

“I’ll admit I’m impressed he can do it so fiercely on his deathbed. He is going to make a wonderful knight for The Order,” Beon said, pride and admiration in his tone.

“Indeed, he will,” the one named Seth murmured in agreement. “Young lad, say you will join our order, and you will not die.”

The ridiculous idea didn’t deserve a response, so he again let his eyelids slide shut, attempting to tune out these two morons. At this point, every inch of his body was one big ache and he prayed death would bloody get on with it! As a knight he’d dealt with his share of pain, plenty of it. This was worse than all of it. He’d been stabbed more times than he cared to number, but generally he hadn’t actually noticed the injury until he saw the blood. He’d been struck with arrows, grazed by lances, and slashed with blades. Having those wounds stitched up was a nasty experience as well, but again, he’d tolerated the discomfort well without the aid of ale. Of course he’d fought fearlessly in the hopes that whatever death he might eventually face, it would be a swift and glorious one. Alas, that had not been the case.

“We’ll return as the sun sets to show you,” said Beon.

Again, Max lacked the strength and motivation to respond, so he didn’t. After muttering something about the low position of the sun in the sky, the men finally left, and Max was able to slip into an un-restful and aching slumber.
 ***
Some fool who needed to die a violent death was poking at his shoulder. Max wanted nothing more than to reach for his sword and slice the idiot in two. Unfortunately, he couldn’t find the ability to even lift his arm. Feeling his fingers twitch, he attempted to lower his eyebrows to look as fierce and deadly as possible.
Next the person tapped at his cheek in the most obnoxious way possible. “Max, look at us,” whispered a voice that seemed vaguely familiar even though he couldn’t place it in his toxic-weakened state of mind.
Wishing to swat away the unwanted contact, Max tried to lift his arm but only succeeded in another twitch of his fingers.

“We need to get him out of here,” said another man softly.

What the...?

“He looks like hell. I don’t think we have much time.”

One of the men cleared his throat and hissed next to his ear, “Max. If you had a choice whether you lived or died, what would you choose?”

Max made a weak scoffing noise. “I don’t have that choice—” Those five words had scraped their way out and he didn’t know if he could speak any more.

“But what if you did?” The man gave him a shake. “There isn’t much time. Give me your answer.”
Ignoring them wasn’t getting him what he wanted, but answering might. Hoping they’d leave him alone after this, Max pushed out through his dry lips, “Life.” This wasn’t the kind of death he’d fantasized about. He was supposed to die in a gruesome battle having saved the king through his valiant heroics, not from some bloody infection....

“What did he say?” one of the men asked. To Max it felt like he’d leaned closer.

“He said life.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes, life does not rhyme with death.”

“I think we should bite him before we try moving him.”

What? Max felt his insides cringe at the strange twist to their conversation. He must be hallucinating. Please, God, take me now! he prayed in his head.

“I concur.”

His eyes swung open and Max tried to focus on the faces hovering above him in the darkened chamber.

“He’s looking! Hurry, show him your fangs.”

Max blinked and stared at what he assumed was the man’s mouth. He had to be hallucinating this entire exchange, it was just too odd.

“Are you showing him?”

“Yes, of course I am!”

A moment of silence.

“I don’t think he can see them.”

“Eye contact, then?”

“Look at him, Seth! He’s completely addled!”

“Breath then.” First the shadow of one of the men’s head fell over his face, then cool air rasped against his skin and he felt himself sink farther into the mattress as even more coherent thought was snatched from his brain. If he hadn’t been completely addled before, he was now.

Max felt the men lift his limp arms from the mattress and then the coolness of breath, or what he thought was breath, as it touched his wrists, just before a slight pinching sensation caused him to attempt pulling back. He was too weak to even budge....

Morpho, her family, and her new friend must decide, do they escape from the horrifying demoness or fight for their own destiny. How far will Pazuzu go to save his daughter from a hellish fate? Banished to Victorian London

“Auburdeen Perneila Hayle,” Sassafras hissed, the amber glow from his cat eyes growing until the front of the wicker cage shone with it, “you will do whatever you can to behave yourself, to not embarrass me or your mother and to absolutely under every circumstance maintain a firm hand on your horrid temper.”

My anger simmered. Yes, I had a temper. And yes, it had taken me into situations in the past that perhaps I shouldn't have been part of, situations that usually devolved into fistfights and incoherent yelling at the offender. He should be grateful I always kept control of myself enough my magic never came into play. Except that one time. But it wasn't my fault. Not really. And the offender recovered. Eventually.

Auburdeen Hayle is the sixteen-year-old daughter of the next leader of her coven. When the transition of power becomes tense, Burdie is sent from her home in America to stay with old friends in London to keep her safe. But a handsome young man chooses to hide from the police in her hansom, drawing Burdie into an underground world of magic that challenges even her sense of adventure and puts her at odds with the very people who are meant to protect her.

If you love Smoke and Magic, don't forget to check out the Hayle Coven series--and the adventures of Auburdeen's great great great granddaughter, Sydlynn, in Book One: Family Magic http://tinyurl.com/7wkoswt

Seeking Jack Bishop

“Are we sure we have the right place?” I didn’t want to doubt Josephine, but all we had was the coin and her sorcery. Even she admitted in the beginning there was a chance it wouldn’t work.

She simply pointed at the large sign hanging on the fence. “Brindle Holdings.” But which Brindle? Samuel, or his sister, Georgina? The woman who my mother trusted me with, her own very best friend? Could the woman be playing us all false?

Not that it mattered, really. I was a fugitive. Whether Georgina was in league with her brother or not, the coven was convinced of my guilt. And that was all she needed to burn me at the stake, innocent of Samuel’s actions or not.

Auburdeen Hayle is supposed to be in London for her own protection. But since she chose to help and befriend Jack Bishop, everything she knows and understands has fallen to pieces around her. Worse, her friend is lost and in the hands of those who want to use him as a weapon, being slowly devoured by the living metal that infects him. Hunted by the coven meant to protect her and the constabulary being controlled by the very man who holds Jack captive, Burdie is forced to ally herself with those to whom truth and honesty are a convenience.

17 year old Jadyn and her dad are vampire hunters. That is until her dad decides it's time for Jadyn to have a "normal" life. When he moved them to Miami, Florida the last thing Jadyn expected to find was vampires.

Jadyn doesn't want to have a normal life, but then she starts to make new friends. She starts to think that maybe a normal life might not be so bad after all. But soon she realizes that maybe her friends aren't "human" as she once thought they were. On top of everything else a very powerful vampire, Tabatha, seeks revenge on Jadyn. People from her school start disappearing, and people start dying. She wants to stop the deaths, but Tabatha has other plans for her. Can Jadyn stop the one vampire that is impossible to kill before its too late?

YA Indie Carnival ~ Lucky

Saturday, March 17, 2012

This week we're supposed to be posting lucky excerpts. I looked, and I just couldn't decide on an excerpt to share for this one. So instead I decided to tell you about what I've been reading. Three books at once, and I REALLY like all of them, but one of them did steal my attention from the other two.

First up is Entwined by Heather Dixon. The cover is the first thing that drew me to this book. I just can't seem to stop staring at it. I've found the story is also very well-done and very intrieging. This is the one I started first. I'm not done, but would recommend it.

Next is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. My girlfriends told me to hurry up and read it so we can go see the movie together. Otherwise, I'm not sure I would have picked it up just yet. The first person/present tense really threw me at first. I'm not a big fan of first person or present tense, but I got used to it, and now I can totally see why people love it. Anyway, I've only gotten partway in through the first chapter and I really need to finish before the movie comes out! If you want this on Kindle, it's on sale for $5.01 right now.

And lastly is ReVamped by Ada Adams. This is the one that stole my attention away from the first two, believe it or not! Gorgeous cover don't you think?! This one just draws me in as I take in all the detail. The story also drew me in.

I only have time to read right before bed and for some reason when I started this one, I found that I kept reaching for it when it was time to read even though all three are kept beside my bed. ReVamped is written by an indie author, and obviously it has vampires in it. I don't know why I love vampires so much, I just do and always have since movies like Love At First Bite. I never saw this movie in the theater, just an old re-run of it on TV. But it cracks me up, and it's when my love affair with vampires started.

Ada Adams has created something that brings me back to the lighthearted side of vampires like that movie, but in a completely different way. In this story there are vampire misfits, a vampire chewing bubble gum and popping the bubble with her fang, and special blood drinks available to vampires so they don't have to bite people. I'm not done yet, but I will be soon. THEN  I'll finished Entwined and The Hunger Games.

Description for ReVamped:
Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

Lunar Love Giveaway Hop

(This giveaway is now closed. I will email the winners as soon as I have the names entered into Virtual Hat. Thank you to the 122 people who entered. Good luck!)

Hosted by the wonderful I'm A Reader, Not A Writer and Bookworm Lisa.

The magic in the Fateful Trilogy is centered around a curse that is triggered by night while the moon hangs in the sky. During the day, Ethan is like any other guy. It's only at night that he's a vampire. His fangs won't even come out during the day. In the Fateful cover designs it was important to me that the moon be visible. In the test cover to the right, you can actually see the sun and the moon at the same time because of the story line.

Here is how it works with Fateful vampires:
The vampire curse only surrounds them when the sun has set and the world is lit with moonlight. At night their hearts stop beating. Like snakes, they have fangs. Their eyes turn magical and hypnotic. Their breath is also dosed with the magic, becoming a potion that will subdue the victim and make them want the death the vampire can bring. With supernatural powers and strength, a cursed being cannot be escaped when moon resides in the sky. During the day, none of this is the case...you would never know you could be facing someone who is a bound by a dark curse by night--and a mortal by day.

I'll let Ethan explain how the curse came about:
Ethan exhaled, his golden brows wrinkled, and then he began. “Once upon a time there was a sorceress who fell in love with a mortal man named Benjamin. He didn’t know she was a sorceress, but when she confessed this to him, wanting him to know the truth, he was disgusted. When he tried to leave her, he told her that she was a curse to humanity. Lilith, that was her name, was so hurt and so angry that she cast a spell on him before he could leave. She said, ‘Now you will forever be the curse to humanity!’ Her spell turned him into a demon, a predator of humanity. She gave him immortality like herself, so he would be forced to wander this earth, forever lonely. And she made him beautiful so women would want to love him, but he wouldn’t be able to love them back without killing them. She also took his heart away from him, by causing it to stop beating, because he had broken hers. She made him into a demonic human to curse humanity … she turned him into a vampire.”

Lilith made them need blood, but it's not just about the blood. It's also about the life-force that is taken when a vampire feeds on someone. As I wrote my version of this myth, I realized I needed the vampire to feed on someone or something living, not bagged blood, because I really think that is how Lilith would have planned it. She wanted Benjamin to become a killer and to be miserable. She wanted him to be a monster that took more than just blood from the victim. She wasn't pleased when she realized that she'd mistakenly left a few loopholes in her curse, and that Benjamin actually liked being a vampire. After I'd made my decisions about the way I wanted my myth to work, I further researched how other writers had done vampires...

Lynsay Sands created vampires from Atlantis with the use of nano technology, which I found highly fascinating. The only drawback for them--while the nanos make them perfect and help to heal them, the nanos also require extra blood, hence the need for fangs. I wish I'd thought of it!

Kerrelyn Sparks created a world where there are good vampires and bad vampires. The bad love to feed off of people, but the good drink a line of special vampire cuisine created by one of the good vampires who happens to be a scientist. They have chocolood, and a wine version. What a fun idea! Wish I'd thought of this too.

Anyway, those are two of my favorites. After writing my own vampires, I actually realized that mine unintentionally resemble the old (original) vampires, like Varney the Vampire. (1845) This is from Wikipedia on Varney:

"Varney was a major influence on later vampire fiction, particularly Dracula by Bram Stoker. Many of today's standard vampire tropes originated in Varney: Varney has fangs, leaves two puncture wounds on the necks of his victims, has hypnotic powers, and has superhuman strength. Unlike later fictional vampires, he is able to go about in daylight and has no particular fear or loathing of crosses or garlic. He can eat and drink in human fashion as a form of disguise, but he points out that human food and drink do not agree with him. His vampirism seems to be a fit that comes on him when his vital energy begins to run low; he is a regular person between feedings. This is also the first example of the "sympathetic vampire," a vampire who loathes his condition but is nonetheless a slave to it."

You may find this comparison of traits in other vampires interesting:
Fateful vampires: Are not pale, have fangs, good feed on animals, hypnotizing eyes, potion-like breath, and are alluring.
Varney the Vampire (1845): white and bloodless, has fangs, hypnotic eyes, looks ordinary until he is a vampire.
Bram Stoker's vampires (1897): Are pale, have fangs, hypnotic eyes, and are very beautiful.
Anne Rice's vampires: Skin is pale, smooth, marble-like, have fangs, good feed on animals, are alluring and beautiful.
Vampire Diaries: Are not pale, have fangs, good feed on animals or bagged blood, hypnotizing eyes, and are alluring.
Twilight: Are pale, hard as marble, sparkle, no fangs, good feed on animals, and are very alluring.
Vampire Academy: Are pale, have fangs, ordinary looks, but have red-ringed irises.
Dresden Files (White court):Are not pale, no fangs, are extremely attractive.

I've listed very few here. But most vampires have special gifts, many can read minds, most have some sort of change in eye color, and many can turn a person with just one bite.

On to the next creature of the moon. Werewolves...I've got those in my stories too...But I won't bore you with that. Let's move on to the prizes!: (I'll give away two prizes again.)

YA Indie Carnival ~ Seasons

Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Our theme this week is about what seasons we like to write in. I tend to choose warmer weather, spring and summer. But I really do need to break out of that habit...

The Fateful Series is set in England. And I tend to make my characters suffer in terms of circumstance instead of temperatures. For example: In the beginning of Fateful, Brianna, Danielle's' cousin, leaves her alone to drive in London her first week there. I've driven in London, and while it can be done, it is rather hair-raising. Briana left her alone to drive a car with the steering wheel on the opposite side of the car--that needed to be driven on the opposite side of the road from what she was used to--in an incredibly busy city in terms of traffic. Poor Danielle! LOL But a great way to make her suffer and more easily get lost... Well, at least I thought so. Brianna does apologize for it later, and never repeats the rude and rather selfish act. In her defense, she is a teen, she was distracted by a hot guy, and she was able to drive in Colorado with the situation reversed. So from her perspective, why couldn't Danielle do it too? As I said before, this is circumstance and not weather.

My father who lived in England requested some weather when he knew I was writing the story. For him I added fog and rain...which are the things he complained most about from his time there. I did add a battle scene in Fractured where it rains on them. Here's an excerpt:

She leaned into him. There was something soothing at least about just having him there even as violence filled her view. Where had Cedric gone? Danielle couldn’t see him any longer and the rain started to come down harder. Watching in horror, she noticed as others were drawn into the fray, completely overpowered by so many. The protective circle around them shrank until a wide gap formed between Richard and Beon.
Vampires moved in, engaging Ethan and then her. She could still feel him behind her as they fought off the attack, his arms and body shifting, sometimes even bumping into her with his efforts.
Punching one man in the chest, Danielle was almost startled when he flew back with such force he plowed over a few others in his wake. She caught another under the chin. His head snapped back sending raindrops flying from his skin and then, even more shocked, she watched as he flipped up and back almost like a fish. Finally she was on even ground with her skills.
She marveled at that too long, however, because someone managed to clip her in the cheek. Sharp pain exploded in her face. Grunting in agony, Danielle’s head whipped to the side, as her now wet hair swung around, slapping her skin. Her shoulder smashed into Ethan’s.
“Are you all right?” she heard him ask through the ringing in her ears. The entire right side of her face was throbbing now.
Swinging out, she made sure she blocked the next fist aimed at her head. Droplets of water splattered her face with the impact. “I thought you said it doesn’t hurt being immortal?”
“Ah, that...”
They turned as they battled with their backs practically glued together. “What do you mean by ‘ah, that?’”
“I neglected to mention—”
His words were cut off as the crowd attacking them intensified and came from what seemed like all directions. She swung and kicked with everything she had until she took another hit in the stomach. Air whooshed out of her lungs and she doubled over. Forcing herself to shake it off, Danielle tossed the saturated strands of hair out of her face, straightened and kept fighting. Her now soaked leather jacket began resisting her movement and she wished she’d removed it beforehand as Richard had done. Along with taking inventory of her wet clothing, Danielle did note the fact that she’d lost contact with Ethan.
Still fending off blows from opponents in front of her and to either side, she tossed a quick look over her shoulder.  Unable to see him, Danielle whirled around to take on the new onslaught coming from behind. Again she searched for Ethan’s blue cap and blond hair. Where had he gone?

~Danielle is wearing a jacket, and Ethan is wearing a hat, so maybe it's obvious I was imagining a fall sort of situation. Anyway, as I'm writing Max and Nadia's story for you, I promise to add some snow! (Note: the great photo of London in the rain was found on Pinterest, and the link doesn't appear to be working to see where it originally came from.)
